Biography:
Dr. İsmail Çalıkoğlu was born in Ankara in 1986. He completed his primary and secondary education at Özel Atılım Lisesi and Özel Büyük Kolej. He finished his high school education at Ankara Science High School. He completed his six-year medical education at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 2010. He completed his General Surgery Residency training at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery, in 2016. During his general surgery training, he received extensive training in the treatment of various cancer types. He also completed his endoscopy and colonoscopy training in this clinic. He focused his studies particularly on colorectal cancer and bariatric surgery. In 2016, he defended his thesis titled “Comparison of crystallized phenol application with surgical treatment in patients with pilonidal sinus” and received the title of “Specialist in General Surgery.” His thesis was accepted as a “Podium Presentation” at the ASCRS 2016 congress, a prestigious international colorectal surgery society, and was presented in Los Angeles, USA. His thesis work was also published in one of the most respected journals in the field, “Diseases of the Colon & Rectum.”
Dr. İsmail Çalıkoğlu completed his mandatory service at Muş State Hospital, where he performed many emergency and elective surgeries and re-established the endoscopy and colonoscopy unit to provide active service. In 2018, he joined the “Istanbul Bariatrics” team and intensively participated in bariatric surgery, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, gastric balloon applications, and anti-reflux (hiatal hernia) surgeries. During this time, he contributed to many academic studies, and the articles written with the team were published as original articles and case presentations in leading journals in the field of obesity surgery. He participated in various national and international congresses and made presentations. After the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020, he continued his work at Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital, 1st Surgical Department. He established the “Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery” outpatient clinic. He was part of the team that achieved many firsts in this newly established hospital. He was part of the team that performed the hospital’s first sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgeries. Continuing his academic career here, Dr. İsmail Çalıkoğlu presented scientific studies at many national and international congresses. He also contributed as a chapter author in scientific books. During this period, in April 2022, he had the opportunity to share experiences on Bariatric Revision Surgery with Dr. Bruno Dillemans at AZ Sint-Jan Hospital, Bruges, Belgium.
As of 2023, Dr. İsmail Çalıkoğlu is accepting patients at his private clinic and continuing his academic career. He has presented scientific studies and chaired sessions at national and international congresses. Dr. İsmail Çalıkoğlu performs sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, mini-gastric bypass, diabetes surgeries, endoscopic gastric balloon, and swallowable gastric balloon applications in obesity and metabolic surgery. He develops dietitian-supported programs on alternative weight loss methods and medication-assisted weight loss methods. He is married with two daughters. He is an active member of the Turkish Surgical Society, the Turkish Obesity Surgery Society (TOSS), the Turkish Colon and Rectal Surgery Society (TKRCD), and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO).
